It might make your grandma gasp, but I'm here to give you THE TALK. The budgets and bees talk. I know. I'm bringing up the dirtiest word in the wedding industry...BUDGETS. You'd probably rather talk about your honeymoon plans with your family...(cue sexy saxophone music). As your florist, I've had this conversation with brides over and over. It's ok to blush a little when you hear the b-word. Grab a cup of coffee, tea, hot chocolate, wine...whatever it takes. Because you and I are going to have a little discussion about this taboo topic. Why is Budget A Dirty Word?No matter where you are in life, money is always such a sensitive issue. You work hard for it! And if you aren't the one paying for your wedding, you know that your friends or family members work hard for their money too. When it comes to weddings, many emotions and traditions are tied to the day. When money, emotions, and traditions are combined, it can be like a cocktail grenade. Another thing I hear a lot is...it's only ONE day. You're either thinking It's one day so we can splurge. OR It's one day so why waste the money on things that don't matter. Whatever side of the coin you're on, I'm here to help you! Some brides I meet feel awkward discussing the budget because they are a little cautious about giving me that trust. Well, let me let you in on a secret.... I'm not here to adjust your thinking about the budget because when I got married, I was EXTREMELY budget minded. This is my secret power. My mama taught me to pinch pennies, so I've always shopped clearance sales and thrift stores. My wedding was no different. My great aunt went dress shopping with me and she nickle-and-dimed the sales associate about a tiny stain on the sample dress I tried on. The dress fit like a glove, so they sold it to us with the little stain for a huge discount. Let's just say, my family educated me VERY WELL in the Budget and the Bees. So don't be afraid to tell me your budget goals. You're hiring me to be your very own thrifty great-aunt... Love Your BudgetWhen a bride and a budget come together, a beautiful wedding is born. The first step is to understand that money does not determine the style and theme that you can achieve when it comes to flowers. Next, is to envision where you want to prioritize the flower eye-candy. Do you want to treat your bridesmaids with luscious bouquets? Or would you rather have a larger than life ceremony backdrop? Or do you want your guests to be surrounded with bigger centerpieces and garlands? CommunicationI left the best part of the Budget and the Bees talk for the last. Communication. Once you've established your priorities and vision, tell your family and friends who are helping on the cost. That way opinions on traditions that don't matter as much to you won't cut from your budget goals. Then talk to me. I've been apart of many wedding styles and budgets, and in all honesty, my goal is to make any budget work for any wedding day story. Now that I've burned your ears a bit, I hope you can walk away from this screen and confidently make your grandma blush with the dirty little B-word. ;) Con Amor, NIA Photo Cred: Sasha Matsumura
